AICM student Daniel Sacqualini plays drums for heavy metal band ‘Elegist’. With plenty of gigs lined up to promote their new single ‘Endeavour’ and more recordings on the way, the band is gearing up for a massive year in 2012. Staff News AICM is excited to welcome a bunch of new and returning teachers this semester: Leon Gaer, Adrian Barr, Avigail Herman, Daniel Portelli and Jamie Castrisos. LEON GAER Born in 1954 and raised in Los Angeles, Leon moved to Sydney in 1987. He has been a full time professional musician since 1973 and as a bass player, has played on over 1,500 recording sessions in Los Angeles, New York and Sydney for CDs and television. Campus News The ever-expanding AICM library now has an additional lot of books recently added to its collection, thanks to its generous donators, Dr Rex Hobcroft and Ralph Collins’ family. The primary library located on the first level (F1) has increased to include Rex Hobcroft’s piano reference books and assorted pian o sheet music collection. The secondary library located in Building B (P1) has been newly created to house books sent over from Ralph Collins’ own personal collection, mostly containing classical music biographies, BBC magazines and CDs. Campus News AICM has expanded its academic offerings this semester with the introduction of new electives and revival of past favourites. Due to an overwhelming response for the digital media focus area, the Recording elective will be split into 2 classes. The Recording and Production electives will now be taught by Adrian Barr, who is also the technical supervisor for Performance class. The Music Theatre/Drama elective has been established to coincide with the already popular Music Theatre focus area. This subject will be taught by Avigail Herman. Events News Plans are well under way for AICM’s 20th anniversary concert, to be held at the end of the year on October 16th at the Seymour Centre in Broadway. This event is in major celebration of AICM’s long-time run as an elite music education school - going on 20 years! - and will involve a collaborative presentation of speeches and performances amongst current and past teaching staff, students, AICM alumni and special guest appearances from industry professionals. Events News Earlier this week AICM welcomed our new students for 2012 with an exciting and motivating orientation day. Students were entertained with performances from some of AICM’s talented returning students, Quynh Chan Nguyen (piano) and Yejin Min (violin) who performed pieces by Beethoven, and the contemporary ensemble group who performed Trouble in Mind. ‘I am so excited to be studying at AICM this year.
